How to Tie the Davy Knot

  1. Thread the line through the hook eye.
  2. Form a loose loop with the tag end passing over the standing line.
  3. Bring the tag end behind and through the loop.
  4. Moisten and pull the standing line to tighten the knot against the hook eye.
  5. Trim the tag end closely.

Pros

  • Extremely fast to tie — even in cold or wet conditions
  • Very small knot profile
  • Uses very little tippet material

Cons

  • Slightly lower strength than the double Davy
  • Can be hard to see and verify with fine tippets

Best Used For

Quickly tying on flies during active fishing. Invented by Davy Wotton, it is a favourite among trout anglers who change flies frequently.
