Turle Knot

How to Tie the Turle Knot

  1. Thread the line through the hook eye.
  2. Tie a loose double overhand knot (or slip knot) around the standing line.
  3. Pass the loop over the fly so it sits behind the hook eye.
  4. Tighten by pulling the standing line until the knot seats snugly against the back of the hook eye.
  5. Trim the tag end.

Pros

  • Fly sits perfectly straight in line with the tippet
  • Simple and quick to tie
  • Works well with up-eye and down-eye hooks

Cons

  • Lower breaking strength than other knots
  • Can slip with very slippery tippet materials

Best Used For

Attaching flies to tippet in fly fishing, especially with turned-up or turned-down eye hooks where a straight presentation is desired.
