How to Tie the Turle Knot
- Thread the line through the hook eye.
- Tie a loose double overhand knot (or slip knot) around the standing line.
- Pass the loop over the fly so it sits behind the hook eye.
- Tighten by pulling the standing line until the knot seats snugly against the back of the hook eye.
- Trim the tag end.
Pros
- Fly sits perfectly straight in line with the tippet
- Simple and quick to tie
- Works well with up-eye and down-eye hooks
Cons
- Lower breaking strength than other knots
- Can slip with very slippery tippet materials
Best Used For
Attaching flies to tippet in fly fishing, especially with turned-up or turned-down eye hooks where a straight presentation is desired.
