How to Tie the Blood Knot

  1. Overlap the two line ends by about 15 cm.
  2. Wrap one tag end around the other line 5 times.
  3. Bring that tag end back and pass it between the two lines at the center.
  4. Repeat with the other tag end, wrapping in the opposite direction.
  5. Pass the second tag end through the center gap in the opposite direction.
  6. Moisten and pull both standing lines to tighten. Trim tags.

Pros

  • Very slim profile passes through rod guides easily
  • Strong connection between similar diameter lines
  • Time-tested and trusted by fly fishers

Cons

  • Difficult to tie with lines of very different diameters
  • Requires practice to tie consistently

Joining two lines of similar diameter, especially monofilament. Essential for building fly fishing leaders.
